Abstract
This communication identifies which transformation processes of television
are affected by the digitalization. Next, it emphasizes which are the main
challenges that the migration towards DTT supposes for the public broadcasters.
It also offers a review of the implementation of DTT in Spain since 1998 until
2005, when the government finally designed a new plan to reactivate the process,
after 3 years of complete inactivity. Finally, the case of Catalonia is analysed.
In this region the digitalization has become a priority for the public institutions.
Together with the Catalan public broadcaster, the public administration has
designed a plan to achieve the switch-over during 2008-09.
